What happens when someone experiences God's power but refuses to surrender their heart?
That's exactly what we see with Ahab. In chapter 20, God gives him victory after victory. Not because Ahab deserves it, but because God wants Israel to know that He alone is Lord. God even reminds the enemy that He isn't just the God of the mountains, but the God of the valleys too.
Ahab witnesses miracle after miracle. He sees God's hand. He experiences God's mercy and he wins battles he should have lost. And still his heart never truly changes.
By the time we get to chapter 21, the battlefields are gone, but the condition of Ahab's heart is now exposed. He has a palace, Power, Wealth, and Influence. But he can't enjoy any of it because he wants one thing that doesn't belong to him.
A vineyard.
So He sulks and he pouts and throws a fit. He refuses to eat like a spoiled child because he can't have what someone else has. A man who had witnessed God's power could still be controlled by jealousy, entitlement, and selfishness.
But How often do we experience God without actually being transformed by Him?
We attend church.
We hear powerful sermons.
We worship.
We watch prayers get answered.
We've seen God come through time and time again.
But if our hearts aren't surrendered, it's possible to experience the presence of God while still clinging to our own pride, our unforgiveness, comparison, greed and selfish ambition.
God never intended for His power to just impress us. It's meant to transform us. That's the tragedy of Ahab's life. He experienced miracle after miracle, and still his heart is unchanged.
I don't want that to be my story. I don't just want to witness what God can do and be just an observer. I want Him to change who I am. It's not enough to see fire fall from heaven. Its not just about winning the battle.
It isn't even about watching God provide.
The most important thing is a heart that's surrendered enough for God to transform it.
