One sentence stopped me right in my tracks as I read this chapter this morning
"I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me." (1 Kings 22:8)
Think about that for a minute.
King Ahab had 400 prophets telling him exactly what he wanted to hear. Go into battle. You'll win. Everything is going to be fine. But there was one prophet, Micaiah, who was willing to tell him the truth. Ahab didn't hate Micaiah because he was rude. He didn't hate him because he was wrong. He hated him because the truth made him uncomfortable.
I think we all have a little bit of Ahab in us.
We love encouragement. We love being reminded of God's promises. We love hearing about blessing and favor. But what about correction? What about the friend who lovingly calls us higher? The pastor who preaches a message that steps on our toes? The Scripture that exposes something in our own hearts?
Those moments aren't always comfortable, But they're often where God does His deepest work. I've learned over the years that the people who have helped me grow the most weren't the ones who always agreed with me. They were the ones who loved me enough to tell me the truth.
And truth isn't always easy to hear. But it is always a gift. Ahab rejected God's voice because it wasn't the voice he wanted. He surrounded himself with people who agreed with his desires instead of pointing him toward obedience. And in the end, it cost him everything.
It makes me wonder...
When I open my Bible each morning, am I looking for God to affirm everything I already think? Or am I inviting Him to change me?
There's a big difference.
One seeks comfort.The other seeks Christ.
Lord, don't let us become people who only listen to voices that agree with us. Give us hearts that welcomes Your truth even when it's uncomfortable. I'd rather be lovingly corrected by God than comfortably deceived by the world.
