I think 1 Kings 19 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.
As a minister its one of the most real and relatable chapters.
One minute, Elijah is standing on Mount Carmel calling down fire from heaven. He's watching one of the greatest miracles recorded in Scripture happen right before his eyes. Revival breaks out, the drought is ending. You would think this would be the high point of his ministry.
Instead he's exhausted, afraid, and running for his life. I've been there. Not running from Jezebel, of course, but feeling the weight that can come after pouring yourself out. Sometimes the greatest battles don't happen before the victory they happen after it.
After you've preached the sermon. After you've led the Bible study. After you've prayed for everyone else. After you've poured and poured until there's nothing left to give.
Elijah finds himself sitting under a broom tree asking God to let him die. What amazes me is God's response. He doesn't shame Elijah. He doesn't tell him to "have more faith." He doesn't remind him of Mount Carmel.
He lets him rest.
He feeds him and He gives him water. Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is rest and receive the care of God.
Then Elijah travels to Mount Horeb the very mountain where God met Moses. And I wonder if he thought, Maybe if I go where God spoke before, He'll speak to me too. He goes where he knows God once was, hoping to find him there too. And then he waits.
A mighty wind tears through the mountain.
But God isn't in the wind. An earthquake shakes the ground. But God isn't in the earthquake. Then fire comes. But still God isn't in the fire.
Then he hears it...A whisper.
And its not because God couldn't speak through all of the big things or in a big way, But because Elijah didn't need another big miracle at that moment. He needed to hear the voice of the Father speaking life back into his weary soul.
And isn't that just like Jesus...
He meets us in our exhaustion.
He reminds us we're not forgotten.
He gives us a fresh purpose when we feel like quitting.
Elijah thought his story was over.
But God said, Nope. I've still got work for you to do.
Then I love what happens next. God sends Elijah to anoint Elisha. And when Elisha realizes what God is calling him to, he slaughters the oxen, burns the plows, and follows Elijah. No backup plan. No safety net.
No turning back. He burns the very thing he could have returned to. He's all in. This is it for him. Burn the Ships!
And then one of my favorite parts of the chapter. Elijah believed he was completely alone. But God shows him, "I have reserved seven thousand who have not bowed to Baal."
Isn't that encouraging.
The enemy loves to convince us we're the only ones still standing. The only ones still believing. The only ones still fighting. But God always has a remnant. He always has people you haven't met yet. People who will encourage you. People who will walk beside you. People who will run the race with you.
Maybe today you're somewhere in 1 Kings 19.
Maybe you're under the broom tree or naybe you're climbing the mountain looking for God.
Maybe you're waiting for Him to speak to you once again. Or maybe He's asking you to burn the oxen and step fully into what He's called you to do.
Wherever you are, don't miss what this chapter is saying. The same God who met Elijah in his weariness is still meeting weary people today.
Sometimes He comes in the fire.
Sometimes He comes in the miracle.
But sometimes He comes in a whisper.
Listen for His Voice. He still speaks!
