Godly Sorrow.. The Kind That Heals, Not Hurts
Day 52 of 90 days in the New Testament
Daily reading 2 Corinthians 7-9
2 Corinthians 7:10 (NLT) "For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There's no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death."
Before Paul wrote these words, he had sent a tough letter to the church in Corinth. A church he had planted and loved. But over time, they drifted. Pride, division, and compromise had crept in like slow leaks in a boat. So Paul did what any loving leader would do...He grabbed the patch kit and spoke truth, even when it hurt.
His words were firm, maybe even a little harsh but they came from a heart that longed to see the people of God made whole again. He didn't want to condemn them. He wanted to call them back. And when he heard that they had received his correction, repented, and turned back toward God, Paul rejoiced. The very letter that caused sorrow ended up leading to revival.
That's the kind of sorrow Paul talks about here.Godly sorrow. It’s the ache that draws you closer to God instead of pushing you away.
Ive felt it before, that heavy ache in my chest after realizing Id messed up. That "why did I do that again?"feeling. That's sorrow. But not all sorrow is the same.
There's a difference between shame and conviction.
Shame says, "You're a failure."
Conviction says, "You messed up, but let's make it right."
One chains you to regret; the other leads you to repentance.
Godly sorrow is like the tide pulling us back toward shore after we've drifted too far. It doesnt drown us, it rescues us. It's the Holy Spirits gentle correction saying, "Come back. Let's fix this together".
Worldly sorrow, though, is like being stuck in a storm of guilt with no anchor. It beats you up and tells you you're unworthy to sail again. But Godly sorrow repairs the cracks in your hull it strengthens you for the next voyage.
So if you've been feeling that tug lately, don’t resist it. Let the waves of conviction carry you back toward the heart of God. His correction isnt to crush you, it's to course correct you.
Hes the Captain who doesn't abandon ship when storms hit. He climbs into the mess with you, steadies the sails, drawing you back to him.
