One thing I've noticed as we've been reading through Chronicles is that we're looking back at stories we've already read. We're not reading new events. We're seeing familiar ones through a different lens.
Today's reading is another one of those stories. IDavid wanted the Ark of the Covenant, the symbol of God's presence, back in Jerusalem. The people were celebrating.There was worship, music and joy. Then, in what feels like an instant, Uzzah reaches out to steady the Ark and he dies. It's one of those moments that makes you stop for a minute.
So today I slowed down and asked the Lord,
What am I missing, why is it important for this story to be retold. And then one little phrase jumped off the page. "...because it seemed right to all the people." (1 Chronicles 13:4)
I underlined it immediately. It seemed right. Not just to David but to everyone. And that's where the Lord stopped me. Sometimes what seems right isn't the same as what God has said.
David's desire wasn't wrong. Wanting God's presence at the center of Israel was absolutely the right desire. The problem wasn't what he was doing. It was how he was doing it. God had already given His people instructions for carrying the Ark. It wasn't to be placed on a cart. It was to be carried by the Levites with poles on their shoulders. But instead of following God's instructions, they chose a method that seemed right.
How often do we ask God to bless our plans because they seem like good ideas? How often do we move because something makes sense, everyone agrees, or the timing feels right without first stopping to ask, Lord, what are You saying.
Then we get to Chapter 14, and it's almost like we see a different David. The Philistines came to attack but Before David made a move, he asked God what to do. God answered and David obeyed. And they saw Victory.
But then the Philistines came back. Now If it had been me, I probably would've thought, I already know how this battle goes and went after them the same way, it worked before. But David didn't assume. He asked God again. And this time, God gave completely different instructions.
That really spoke to me. The enemy looked the same. The battle looked the same. But the instructions God gave were different. How often do we try to fight today's battles with yesterday's directions? God never meant for us to live on yesterday's word. He invites us to walk with Him every single day. I think that's the beautiful contrast between these two chapters.
In Chapter 13, David had the right desire but didn't follow God's instructions. In Chapter 14, David refused to move until he heard God's voice. You might say he learned his lesson. One chapter reminds us that good intentions can never replace obedience. And The other one reminds us that victory comes from seeking the Lord alone.
I also couldn't help but think about how much I like routines. I like knowing the plan. I like figuring out the pattern. I can't watch a TV show or a mystery movie without trying to figure it out before it's over. But following Jesus isn't about finding a formula that works every time. It's about walking so closely with Him that we can recognize His voice when He says, "Not this way, this way."
Jesus said, My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.
That's the life I want, don't you?
Not one that's driven by what seems right.
Not one that's built on what worked yesterday.
I want a life that is led by the voice of my Shepherd.
