God is not A Weapon

Today we're in 1 Samuel Chapters 4-5.

Israel is about to go to battle against the Philistines in Chapter 4 and they lose badly.

Then instead of stopping to ask why this happened they decide to go get the Ark of the Covenant back on their own.

And this is where the issue starts. They weren’t seeking God Himself. They were trying to use His presence like a weapon or a good luck charm.

These chapters should challenge us and cause us to look at our own hearts and motives.

Because it’s possible to become familiar with church things while losing awe for God Himself.

We can sing worship songs, attend conferences, post Bible verses, talk about revival and understand Christian culture all while our hearts drift far from reverence and surrender.

And 1 Samuel 4–5 reminds us that God’s presence is not something we control, market, manipulate, or perform around.

                                  He is holy.

But the good news is that even when people mishandle things God is still able to defend His own name and preserve His glory.

The church may fail sometimes but God never stops being God. He doesn't need us to defend his glory. He can defend himself.
