For the last few days, we've watched David prepare. He gathered the stones and the materials to build the temple.He prepared Solomon and he organized the priests and Levites. He prepared the people. And today, he keeps going.
Today David organizes the worshippers. He appoints musicians who will praise God and minister before Him. And he makes sure they are trained and prepared not just talented, but ready to use their gifts for the Lord. Then he appoints the gatekeepers. And at first that might not sound as important as the worshippers. But somebody had to guard the doors. Somebody had to protect what God had entrusted to them, to watch over the treasuries and the things that had been dedicated to the Lord. And David understood that if what God was building was going to continue after he was gone, people would have to remain faithful in their positions.
That meant that the worshippers had to keep worshipping.The gatekeepers had to keep guarding. The stewards had to keep stewarding. And the next generation had to teach the generation after them. And then that generation had to do the same.
David wasn't preparing something just for Solomon. He was also preparing something for generations to come. And as I read this, I couldn't stop thinking about what we already know happens later in Israel's story. Isn't it nice that we already know what happens, even though in our lives we don't always know, this helps us to understand and learn.
Eventually, things changed. Generation after generation passed and the people became comfortable. Compromise and idolatry crept in.
God's Word was neglected and worship became corrupted. And those responsible for spiritual leadership didn't always faithfully carry out their responsibilities. The "doors" that were supposed to be guarded weren't always guarded. And eventually the very temple David had worked so hard to prepare for was destroyed.
That should make us stop for a minute.
Because it means one generation's preparation doesn't remove the next generation's responsibility. David could gather the stones, prepare the worshippers, appoint the gatekeepers and organize everything perfectly.
But he couldn't make future generations remain faithful. Every generation had to choose God for themselves. And so does ours.
I look around at where we are today, and I can't help but wonder if we've stopped guarding some doors too. Have we become so comfortable with the things of God that we've forgotten how precious they are? Have we traded worship for performance? Have we allowed culture to disciple our children more than we have? Have we assumed somebody else would teach them the Word? Have we become better at building ministries than building disciples? Have we stopped paying attention to what we're allowing through the doors of our homes, our hearts, our churches, and our minds?
Those aren't questions I'm asking while pointing my finger at everyone else. I'm asking myself too. Yesterday we talked about preparing people and today I'm reminded that preparing them isn't enough. We have to teach them how to guard what has been entrusted to them. And they have to teach the ones coming after them. That's how legacy continues.
It's Not enough that Grandma knew Jesus.
It's Not enough that Dad served in church.
It's not enough that Mom prayed.
And it's Not enough that the previous
generation built something for God.
Every generation has to decide.
Will we worship?
Will we guard the doors?
Will we steward what God has placed in our hands?
Will we teach the next generation to do the same?
That's why these chapters filled with musicians, gatekeepers, treasurers, names, and assignments matter so much. David knew something we desperately need to remember today. What we don't intentionally guard, we can eventually lose. So yes, somebody has to gather the stones. Somebody has to prepare the people. Somebody has to guard the doors.
And then we have to teach the next generation to do it all over again.
We're not just building for today.
We're building for whoever comes next.
Don't just gather the stones.
Don't just prepare the people.
Guard the doors and teach the next generation why they're worth guarding.
