Today we're in Exodus Chapter 18 and Moses' father-in-law comes to visit and he sees everything Moses is doing to keep the peace and hold everything together. He realizes that this is all too much for one man and gives him advice on how to appoint trustworthy people to help and take some of the load.
Instantly a song started bopping through my head... I can do it on my own doot doot...
When my kids were growing up, we raised them on all the old shows we grew up with. One of our favorites was Fraggle Rock. One episode in particular, Red Fraggle is convinced that she doesn't need the help of the other Fraggles to put on a swimming event. But she soon realizes it's too big of a job for just one Fraggle.
Moses realized this too. He took his father-in-law's advice, and it definitely made life a little easier.
But the part we really need to see is the fact that We can’t do it on our own and neither can our pastors.
God never designed the church to be carried by one person. Pastors aren't meant to do everything. They’re meant to lead, teach, shepherd, and equip. The rest of us are called to come alongside, to serve where we're gifted, and to help lift the burden.
And it takes me back to another old song we sang in kids church so long ago "When we all work together, together, together, When we all work together, how happy we'll be…" Do you remember that one? It was simple. It was catchy. And it's still so true.
When we all do what we're called to do, the load gets lighter, and the joy returns. No one burns out. No one carries it alone.
Not Moses.
Not our pastors.
Not us.
God's work was never meant to be a solo act, it was always meant to be done together.
