Good morning friends.
Not quite noon yet so still counts as morning. Today we're in 1 Samuel 25 and after reading it today Im sitting here with a question on my heart.
What if Abigail had remained silent?
David is angry. Nabal has insulted him, humiliated him, and dismissed him. And David is ready to take matters into his own hands.
Think about it, the giant didn't get him, Saul didn't get him, But offense almost did him in.
Whew. That in itself is a message that will preach.
But then Abigail steps into the story. A woman without a title or an army behind her, but she has wisdom. And she reminds David who he is. She reminds him what God has promised. She reminds him that God is fully capable of handling Nabal without David's help. She ministers to him. And David listens.
But here's the thought I couldn't shake this morning.
What if Abigail had stayed home?
What if she had decided it wasn't her place to speak?
What if she had convinced herself her voice didn't matter?
What if she had remained silent while David marched toward a mistake he would regret?
And What if David had refused to listen because the wisdom was coming from a woman?
What if pride had closed his ears. What if he had said, "Who are you to speak into my life?"
The story would have ended very differently.
David's future would have been damaged by a decision made in anger.
Instead, God used the voice of a wise woman to protect a future king. I think sometimes we forget that encouragement is ministry. Wisdom is ministry. Speaking truth at the right moment is ministry too.
Abigail didn't preach a sermon. She didn't stand behind a pulpit. She simply obeyed God and used her voice. And because she did, a king was redirected.
God has used people in my own life the same way. A friend. A mentor. A spouse. A pastor. Someone who showed up at just the right moment and reminded me who God said I was when I was struggling to remember it myself.
We all need Abigails.
People who help us find our footing when our emotions threaten to pull us off course. People who remind us that offense is a terrible compass. People who will point us back to God.
Don't underestimate the power of your
voice!
You never know when a word of encouragement, wisdom, or truth might keep someone from making a decision they'll regret.
And don't be so proud that you refuse to listen when God sends an Abigail into your life.
Sometimes the voice that protects your future comes from the person you least expected.
And sometimes God's greatest gifts arrive disguised as a wise woman willing to speak up.
