Heart Issue

I think it's easy to read 1 Kings 11 and get stuck on Solomon's many wives and concubines. I questioned his wisdom in that. But if we stop there, we'll miss the real warning.

This chapter isn't just about marriage. It's about a heart that slowly drifted away from God.

When Solomon became king, he asked for wisdom because he knew he couldn't lead God's people without God. He built the Temple and dedicated it to the Lord. God appeared to him not once, but twice, reminding him to walk faithfully and keep His commandments.

Yet years later, Scripture shows us a heartbreaking truth. "His wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God." (1 Kings 11:4)

That's it right there. His heart was divided. That's why the bible teaches us not to align ourselves with others that are unequally yoked. When you hang out with people or attach yourself to someone that doesn't belive as you do they slowly pull you away. Solomon didn't wake up one morning and decide to reject God. The drift happened over time. Little compromises became bigger compromises until the very man who built the Temple was also building places of worship for idols.

As I read this, I couldn't help but think about how often Scripture tells us to guard our hearts. "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." (Proverbs 4:23)

                                      Why?

Because our lives always follow our hearts.

If our hearts drift, eventually our choices will too.

That's why Jesus later said the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. God has never wanted just part of our hearts. He's always wanted all of them.

So today, maybe the question isn't, "Have I walked away from God?"

The best place we'll ever be isn't just doing things for God. It's keeping our hearts fully devoted to Him.

Lord, keep our hearts soft, undivided, and fully Yours. Don't let us slowly drift from the One who has never drifted from us.
