Growing up in kids church, I remember singing a lot of scripture. Not just songs actual verses put to music. And those are the ones I’ve never forgotten. They’re still in there.
I can hear them, word for word.
There’s just something about music, it sticks. It gets down in you in a different way.
And that’s what Deuteronomy 32 is, It’s a song. Moses is literally singing this to them. This was something they needed to carry with them. Something that would come back to them later when they needed it most.
He starts out talking about God, how He’s the Rock, steady, faithful, he doesn’t mess up.
And I love that he starts there. Like, before anything else let’s be clear, God is not the issue.
But then it turns. And he starts talking about the people. And it’s like...ugh...They got comfortable. They got full. And then they forgot. Not overnight or all at once. Just slowly.
And that’s how it happens with us too. We don’t usually wake up one day and decide,
Yeah, I’m done with God. It’s more like We get busy, We get tired, We start handling things on our own. We stop praying like we used to, Stop pressing in like we used to. And it’s not even intentional. It’s just a slow drift.
And then that verse "You forgot the Rock who gave you birth." Whew. Because how do you forget the One who carried you through everything you’ve already been through?
But we do. I know I do.
Even when they forgot Him, He didn’t stop being who He is. He didn’t say, Alright, I’m done. He didn’t move away.
He’s still the Rock.
Steady.
Faithful.
Right where He’s always been.
Yes, there’s correction in this chapter.Yes, there are consequences.
But underneath all of it, I just kept hearing him say, I’m still here.
And I needed that today.
Sometimes it’s not that I’ve walked away, I’ve just gotten a little too far out. A little too independent. A little too distracted. And this felt like a pull back. I don’t want to live off what God did back then. I want to stay connected to who He is right now. I don’t want to get so full of life that I forget the One who filled it.
I want to stay anchored in him. I don't want to forget the Rock.
