Fear is a Terrible Counselor

Published on June 12, 2026 at 9:10 PM

Isn't it strange? Fear makes us question everything except itself. We doubt God's promises, second guess His timing, and pull away from people who love us, yet we trust fear without hesitation. We believe its lies as if they were gospel truth. But fear has never once proven itself faithful. God has.

And yet we put more faith in what terrifies us than in the God who has carried us this far.

Good morning friends.

Today we're in 1Samuel 27-28 and today i was reminded of something I desperately needed to hear...

                Fear is a terrible counselor.

David said, "Someday Saul is going to get me."

But that wasn't what God had said.

God had anointed David king.

God had taken care of him in caves.

God had protected him from spears.

God had rescued him time and time again.

Yet after years of running, David became tired enough to start believing the voice of fear more than the promises of God.

    I get that..I understand that..I can 100% relate because I've been there.

It isn't that we stop loving God.

We just get tired.

Tired of waiting.

Tired of fighting.

Tired of praying the same prayers.

Tired of hoping things will change.

Tired of carrying burdens no one else can see.

And when you're tired, fear gets louder.

"What if this never changes?"

"What if God doesn't come through this time?"

"What if the promise was for someone else?"

And before we reize it fear starts sounding reasonable.

Listen to this, David moved into enemy territory because fear convinced him it was safer there. Crazy, I know, but it happened.

And saul, overwhelmed by fear, went searching for answers in places God had forbidden.

                    Fear drove both men.

Neither one of them made their best decisions from a place of panic.

Don't make permanent decisions from temporary fear.vDon't settle in places God never called you to live because you're exhausted. Don't let fear narrate a story God is still writing.

Be encouraged today. David took a detour, but he wasn't disqualified. He had a moment of weakness, but God wasn't finished with him.

Even when David's faith wavered, God's faithfulness didn't.

Maybe you've been living off worst case scenarios in your mind lately. Maybe fear has been whispering louder than truth. Maybe you're tired.

Can I remind you of something?

Just because fear says, "Someday Saul is going to get me," doesn't mean God has changed His mind about what He promised.

                     Fear may have a voice.

But it doesn't get the final word.

The God who called you is still faithful.

The God who sustained you before will sustain you again.

And if you've taken a detour because you were weary, don't lose heart.

God knows how to lead tired people home.
