God Never Asked for a Building!
As I read 2 Samuel 7 today, something kept stirring in my heart. It literally lept from the page. He never asked for a building. We did that.
David looked around at his palace and realized he was living in comfort while the Ark of God remained in a tent. So he decided God needed a house. At first, that sounds honorable. And it was. But God's response stopped me in my tracks this morning.
God had traveled with His people in a tent for years. Through wilderness seasons.Through battles. Through failures. Through miracles. Through all their wandering, and God never once complained about the tent. Actually he designed it.
God was never looking for a building. He was always looking for a people. We've made church about getting people into a building. But God has always been focused on getting His presence into people.
The God of the wilderness moved. The Ark moved. The cloud moved. The fire moved.
His presence moved.
And the people were supposed to move with Him. Revival has been stirring in my heart so deeply. I don't want just another church service. I don't want another feel good moment. I don't want an emotional experience that stays inside four walls. I want the kind of presence that follows me home. The kind that sits with me on my back porch. The kind that rides with me down the road. The kind that meets me in my prayer closet, in the chicken yard, in the grocery store, and in the middle of ordinary life. The kind of presence that changes the atmosphere wherever I go.
The more I read this chapter, the more I realize God never wanted to be contained.
Not in a tent.
Not in a temple.
Not in a church building.
Not even in our carefully planned services.
God has always desired to dwell among His
people.
To walk with us.
To lead us.
To move with us.
Revival isn't about building something bigger.
It's about making room for the presence of God to be at the center again. Revival isn't what happens in the sanctuary. Revival is what we carry when we leave it.
God never asked David for a building.
And He isn't asking us for one either.
He's asking for hearts that will make room for Him wherever we go. God isn't looking for a place to stay. He's looking for people willing to carry His presence.
