Sowing in Grief

Driving to work this morning it was really foggy. I could only see a little way in front of me. Just enough to keep going. And that feels about right for this season of my life.

So today we're in Genesis 23-25. Sarah dies. Abraham buries her. And instead of rushing past his grief he does something, He buys land. He pays full price even though they offered to give it to him for free. And the first piece of the promise God ever gave him is secured while his heart is breaking. Part of the promises of God may be bought through our grief.

That land wasn't purchased in celebration it was purchased in sorrow. Abraham was sowing even while he was hurting. He was planting something through his tears and his grief. Scripture says, “Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy.” But in the moment, sowing in tears doesn't feel hopeful. It feels heavy. It feels unfair. It feels like planting something you may never live long enough to see grow. And yet, God doesn't waste those seeds.

That cave becomes more than a burial place. It becomes proof that God's promise was already unfolding even when it didn’t look like it. What felt like loss became inheritance. What looked like an ending became a beginning for generations. Abraham now owns a piece of the land promised to him and his future Generations.

He never gets to enjoy that land the way we might expect. But he anchors the promise anyway. He builds for the future while carrying grief in the present.

Driving through the fog this morning, I was reminded faith doesn't always look strong. Sometimes it looks like showing up broken and still doing the next right thing. Sometimes it looks like sowing when you're tired. Sometimes it looks like trusting God to use what hurts.

Your grief is not wasted.

Your obedience in sorrow still counts.

What you plant in tears may become shelter for someone else one day.
